Parenting a gifted and talented child isn’t as easy as people often assume. Finding the right educational fit and facilitating friendships are just two of the many challenges parents of gifted and talented students face. In this webinar, we’ll explore some key tenets and resources to help parents navigate the complexity of supporting their gifted and talented children. Think of it as a start to the instruction manual you wish came with your child!

Lynette Breedlove, Ph.D., is the Director of The Gatton Academy of Mathematics and Science on the campus of Western Kentucky University, a state-wide public residential STEM school for gifted and talented and high ability students. Throughout her career, she has served the needs of gifted and talented students in public schools as a teacher, a gifted and talented facilitator, and central office coordinator/director. In her central office role in a public school district, she led the establishment of a school for highly gifted students that was carefully designed to meet the specialized needs of this exceptional population.  She has been active in local, state, and national advocacy organizations that support gifted students, serving as board president of the Texas Association for the Gifted and Talented, as well as The Association for the Gifted, serving as treasurer and president-elect of the Kentucky Association for Gifted Education, and serving in various leadership roles within the National Association for Gifted Children. She often presents on the needs of gifted children, helping educators and parents understand gifted and talented and high potential children, how their academic and psychological needs are connected, and what they need to flourish.  She completed her master’s degree in Gifted and Talented Education at the University of St. Thomas in Houston, Texas, and her doctorate in Educational Psychology at Texas A&M University.

Lynette Breedlove, Ph.D., es la directora de la Academia Gatton de Matemáticas y Ciencias en el campus de la Universidad Western Kentucky, una escuela pública residencial estatal de STEM para estudiantes superdotados y de altas capacidades. A lo largo de su trayectoria profesional, ha atendido las necesidades de los estudiantes superdotados en escuelas públicas como maestra, facilitadora de programas para superdotados y coordinadora/directora de la oficina central. En su cargo en la oficina central de un distrito escolar público, lideró la creación de una escuela para estudiantes superdotados, cuidadosamente diseñada para satisfacer las necesidades especializadas de esta población excepcional. Ha participado activamente en organizaciones locales, estatales y nacionales de defensa de los estudiantes superdotados, desempeñándose como presidenta de la junta directiva de la Asociación de Texas para Superdotados y Talentosos, así como de la Asociación para Superdotados, como tesorera y presidenta electa de la Asociación de Kentucky para la Educación de Superdotados, y ocupando diversos puestos de liderazgo en la Asociación Nacional para Niños Superdotados. Low self-esteem, anxiety, and depression are just some of the emotional issues that this population of wonderfully neurodiverse children and teens are prone to struggling with, and some are silently struggling without parents or teachers even aware. Explore the emotional implications of common scenarios in school that fuel difficult emotional challenges for neurodiverse students. Help to remedy these struggles by learning about what parents and teachers can do to create support and resilience.
